2006, SAS Easy Check

Security check is one of the most stressing part in air traveling experience. “Easy Check” is a concept that helps people take their time preparing themselves before security check, thus making security check more fluent and less stressing.

GET PREPARED before you pass that gate...

People don’t get so prepared when they go to the security check, which is one important factor that holds back the efficiency. Meanwhile, having people waiting behind you when you are emptying your pockets, is stressing and embarrassing.

So how about having a small platform that you can take it anywhere, take your time, empty your pocket, and then just push it through a scanner? You don’t have to worry about impatient people waiting behind you, nor waiting for a long queue.

Process in a Nutshell

The research part was done together by all the students in my class. First we paid a visit to Arlanda Airport, Stockholm. There we have done some initial research, including learning how the airport works, observing the whole check-in & security check process, and interviewing people. Later on we used some of the interviewees to create persona and scenario.

We brainstormed together and categorized the ideas by stages during the whole air travel process, and were free to choose the area we wanted to work on. I chose security check, because it's the bottle neck of the whole process, and creates a lot of stress and embarrassment.

Technological Choices:

Since airport is such a big system, and for the time frame set by the brief, I found that a very big challenge is to find some solution that could be embedded without breaking too much of the chains.

As for security check, which I think is quite a debatable topic, I chose not to use the new technology such as backscatter scanning, due to concerns about privacy. So in the end I decided to use the existing mechanism for body check, but use a mobile platform for preparing and scanning the hand baggage.
