Initial Concepts and Decisions

Concept 1:

a bar that project beams of light onto the wall, which indicates abnormal value of parameters. Within the given threshold, there would be no light. A light beam above the bar indicates a plus value over threshold, and beneath the bar indicates minus.

The display on the bar indicates the name of the parameter, and the exact value.

The user can turn it into a time slider, which allows checking history values.

Concept 2:

Inspired by the year ring of a tree, this concept uses circles to visualize value changes. If all the parameter value are within the given threshold, you'll see a perfect circle. When one or more of them are over threshold, there'll be bulges or concave appearing. The color would also change according to the deviation.

The user can turn this around to reveal the history and trend of certain parameter:

and detailed information at certain time:

Although the delegates from the paper mill likes the elegance of the 1st concept, I'll continue with concept 2 since it has more potential of presenting more complex relationship and trends of the data.

New Project

it's about data visualization, for a control room environment. We paid a visit 2 weeks ago to one of the biggest paper mill in europe, down in Sundsvall. It was quite an experience to see how they manage to monitor so many things at the same time.

Now 5 and half weeks left, a big list of things to do. Some books I'm gonna read:
